Princess Z Boutique Hotel

Location: Larnaca, Cyprus
Total area: 1140 sqm
Design: 2021
Program: Boutique Hotel

Submerged into an old neighbourhood, the Princess Z boutique hotel and spa complex is faced in pieces of sandstone that lend the walls a layered appearance like a slice through a rock formation.

The hotel comprises 19 hotel suites, and an indoor pool, all connected by chamfered colonnades and gardens. A circular central courtyard filled with trees rising up from the basement level is situated between the old listed and new structures.

The materials have been chosen to relate to the surrounding context and include coursed sandstone, an earthen coloured terrazzo and precast concrete. Timber windows and cladding are made from oak which is untreated and will gradually weather to a silver-grey to match the colour of the stone and flint. The structure is a combination of steel and concrete frame with visual oak joists providing support to the upper floor and roof slab. The terrazzo used for the floor and facade is made using a combination of local stone and marble.

In the listed building, all the historic details were preserved and juxtaposed with modern furnishings. Restored elements include stucco, stained glass windows, and stonework that is 100 years old.

The perforated balcony balustrade design references Cypriot wood-carving technique, which are seen on the street-facing rooms of the new building.
